Intent, Implementation and Impact
At Dogsthorpe Academy, we aim to develop confident, resilient and successful mathematicians who can apply their mathematical knowledge fluently, accurately and purposefully in school and in everyday life.
Through an inclusive approach to mathematics, all pupils, regardless of starting point, prior attainment or individual need, can access the full curriculum. Through appropriate support, challenge and scaffolding, pupils are enabled to secure essential foundational knowledge and skills, achieve success and make sustained progress in mathematics.
Our mathematics curriculum, supported by Oak National Academy and informed by the DfE's Ready-to-Progress Criteria and NCETM Curriculum Prioritisation materials, is carefully sequenced to ensure coherent progression, enabling pupils to build secure understanding over time. Essential foundational knowledge and skills are clearly identified, explicitly taught and regularly revisited, providing the building blocks for future learning. We place equal importance on conceptual understanding and procedural fluency, enabling pupils to make connections, reason mathematically and solve increasingly complex problems.
Through explicit teaching, rich mathematical discussion and a consistent use of representations, pupils develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts and vocabulary. Previously taught knowledge is systematically revisited and connected to new learning, ensuring that understanding is strengthened, retained and built upon.
We believe all pupils can achieve success in mathematics. By fostering curiosity, perseverance and confidence, we prepare pupils to use mathematics purposefully and effectively both now and in the future.

Mathematical Language and Vocabulary
Explicit teaching of mathematical vocabulary enables pupils to communicate, reason and explain their thinking with increasing precision.
Intelligent Practice and Variation
Teachers use carefully designed examples and variation to deepen understanding, address misconceptions and draw attention to important mathematical structures.
Fluency, Reasoning and Problem Solving
In line with the National Curriculum, pupils develop fluency in core facts and procedures, reason mathematically and apply their learning to solve problems in familiar and unfamiliar contexts.
